Cole Sprout, a junior at Stanford and an NCAA Division 1 All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap the Cardinal capturing their 16th Pac-12 men's team title and matching the all-time conference record established by Oregon with a 22-61 victory Oct. 28 against Colorado at the Ag-Ops Course in Riverside, Calif. Stanford, which had five scorers in the top seven as part of seven athletes in the top 20 overall, is scheduled to compete Nov. 11 at the Division 1 West Regional at Chambers Bay Golf Club in University Place, Wash., the same venue where the Cardinal won the March 2021 conference title by a 28-60 margin against Colorado. Sprout, who took third at Pac-12 championship meet, examines his consistency during the past year, highlighted by a streak of 18 consecutive top-10 performances in indoor track, outdoor track and cross country. He revisits placing 81st at the Division 1 cross country final last year at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and Stanford finishing fifth overall, and how those results provided the motivation for Sprout and his Cardinal teammates during summer training. Sprout explains how valuable it was to compete Sept. 24 at the Cowboy Jamboree at the Greiner Family Course at Oklahoma State in Stillwater in order race at the same venue that will play host Nov. 19 to the NCAA championship meet. He also analyzes the depth of Stanford's performances Oct. 14 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational as well as the conference meet, and how proud he is of Meika Beaudoin-Rousseau, Thomas Boyden, Devin Hart and Robert DiDonato and the support they have provided for Sprout, Charles Hicks and Ky Robinson. Sprout speaks about how instrumental coach Ricardo Santos has been in Stanford's success this fall and how his training has been geared toward 10-kilometer races at the regional and national championship meets. He also revisits the success of his alma mater, Valor Christian High, at the Colorado High School Activities Association state final Oct. 29 in Colorado Springs, with the boys team capturing its first Class 5A team title in program history and senior Brooke Wilson eclipsing the all-time state record at Norris Penrose Events Center by covering the 5-kilometer layout in 16:59.17 to become the Eagles' first girls individual champion, and how excited Sprout is for their opportunities to race Nov. 19 at NXR Southwest in Arizona.
